Builders & Contractors Exchange Annual Events

The Builders Exchange sponsors six events annually.  Five of these events are networking events, and the sixth event is the annual scholarship competition.  These six events are described below.

Annual Dinner Meeting - The annual meeting is held on a Saturday in February.  The 2010 Annual Dinner Meeting occurred on Saturday evening, February 20, 2010, as we celebrated the 102nd Anniversary of the Builders & Contractors Exchange at the Hilton – Virginia Beach.  During the short, business portion of the event, newly elected President Bob Ashburner continued the phased program over several years to recognize long-time members by awarding plaques to these members.  The recognition program began with six members who had joined between 1919 and 1928.  This year recognized five firms that joined the Exchange in the 1930’s. These companies were: Conrad Brothers, Inc., founded in 1917, joined in 1933 with Mr. Walter P. Conrad accepting the award; Noland Company, founded in 1915, joined in 1934; E.G. Middleton, Inc., founded in 1920, joined in 1936 with Mr. E.G. ‘Rudy’ Middleton, III accepting the award; Hitt Electric, originally founded in 1937, joined in 1937 with Mr. Tommy Hitt and Mr. Brian Hitt accepting the award.  Horizon provided the music for dancing for our celebration.  The board of directors has begun the planning process for the 103rd Anniversary Meeting to be held on February 19, 2010, at the Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel

Spring GolfThe 2009 spring golf event, took place at Greenbrier Country Club in Chesapeake on Monday, June 1st.  The weather was warm to hot and mostly sunny all day.  We started with a box lunch before golf, and this was followed by a shotgun start for 124 golfers at 1:00 P.M.  Numerous prizes valued at more than $3,600 were presented including cash and gift certificates to winners in three flights for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places plus four closest-to-the-hole prizes and three long-drive prizes.  Bill Chitty was the grand winner of $633.00 from the 50/50 drawing.  At about 5:45 P.M. the golfers enjoyed a picnic-style meal of fried chicken and pork barbeque with all the fixing’s.  The spring 2010 golf tournament will take place June 7th at the Bid-A-Wee Golf Club in Portsmouth, VA. This event will also be the 10h Annual Scholarship Golf Outing this year.  Check the weekly “Bulletin” for details as we near the time of this event.

Seafood Fest PicnicWe held the 2009 Seafood Fest at Picnic Area #5 at Fort Monroe in Hampton from 4:00 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. on June 24th.  We had another beautiful Virginia spring afternoon with temperatures in the low 80’s and warm breezes.  J.P.’s Catering once again supplied us with hot and tasty picnic seafood, and the refreshments were cold and flowing freely.  Historically the seafood fest has been a mid-June event on the Peninsula.  The same should hold true in 2010 as we will hold the Seafood Fest on June 16th from 4 PM until 7 PM. Check the weekly “Bulletin” for details as we near the time of this event in June 2010.

Fall GolfOur 9th Annual Golf Scholarship Tournament returned to Riverfront Golf Club in Suffolk on Monday, September 17, 2009.  The “profits” of the $10,970.92 raised from this event will be used to support the Exchange’s scholarship program.  The players enjoyed an exciting afternoon of golf on a course that as always was again in great shape.  In addition to competing for over $4,000 in prizes, the golfers enjoyed a buffet lunch before the golf and a nice steak dinner afterwards.  Numerous door prizes were awarded to the “lucky” folks.  Also, the winners in two flights for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places won cash prizes of $125.00, $100.00, $75.00, and $50.00 respectively.  The two closest-to-the-hole winners and two long-drive winners received gift certificates.  Also, “lucky” Larry Hartman won the 50/50 drawing, which was $493.00 in cash.  The Builders Exchange’s 10th Scholarship Golf Tournament will take place in June 2010 at Bid-A-Wee.  Mark your golf calendar and watch for details in the weekly “Bulletin”.

Fall Fling PicnicAs history repeats, the fall-fling barbeque and seafood picnic was be held from 4:00 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. on October 9th at the Khedive Temple, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, VA, on the Southside.  For the past several years we have had this event at the Khedive Picnic Area in the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake, and we continued the tradition.  A-Rea’s Mobile “Pig-Nic” from Virginia Beach prepared and served an excellent menu. We had whole roasted pig, fresh BBQ grilled chicken, roasted oysters and all the fixings; baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, desserts, ice tea, lemonade, water and beer.  Mark your calendar for October 2010 for a fine time! Check the weekly “Bulletin” for details as we near the time of this event.
